Localizing websites with CMSs

February 2018 (updated in January 2022)

Founded in 2003, Kornit Digital develops, manufactures and markets digital printing technologies for the garment and fabric industries. For direct-to-garment printing in stunning colours, the company has developed the NeoPigment™ process, complete with inks and pre-treatment. Headquartered in Israel, with additional offices in the USA, Europe and Asia Pacific, Kornit serves businesses in more than 100 countries worldwide.

Since 2013, Kornit has been partnering with Sparkling Lengua for their multilingual translation and desktop publishing (DTP) needs – press releases, brochures, case studies, blog posts and more. In 2017, we localized their website into 6 languages, including Simplified Chinese. Unsurprisingly, this massive project came with a few technical challenges…

Kornit uses WordPress as their Content Management System (CMS). By default, WordPress does not come with features required to create full-blown multilingual websites. After thorough research, we opted for WPML (WordPress Multilingual Plugin), a simple-to-use, yet feature-rich localization extension.

With access to Kornit’s content on WordPress, we exported their files into the XLIFF format (XML Localization Interchange) for content pages and the PO format (Portable Object) for assorted strings. Both formats work seamlessly with the specialized software used by our translators.

But we were not quite there yet… The files were teeming with HTML codes that might have confused our translators, distracting their attention from the work at hand. Luckily, we had previously developed a cascading filter for similar occasions. Using this filter, we hid all unnecessary codes safely away, to bring them back after translation.

With this achieved, translation itself proved smooth and trouble-free. After many years of working for the printing industry, we had seasoned experts at hand in all the target languages – professional, native-speaking linguists with a solid knowledge of Kornit’s market and technology. Content ranged from technical specifications to customer testimonials and legal disclaimers. Combining technical accuracy with a marketing touch, our translators excelled over this entire spectrum.

As a final step, we imported the translated files back into the WordPress CMS. Kornit’s regional experts took a close look at the results and liked what they saw!

In late 2022, we had yet another proof of Kornit’s satisfaction when they asked us to localize their freshly redesigned website into 9 languages this time, including Korean and Turkish.
